My client sent this fabric and requested 2 dresses using my Silver Linings design (see the original dress with the design HERE).

Syukur Alhamdulillah, this is my last 'assignment' just before the due date.

The last dress on my checklist is finally completed yesterday. And before I could say it's time for me to rest, I'm now so busy with customers' e-mails asking about Raya Orders.

So, to my dear customers, thank you so much for your support. Just send your e-mails and I shall reply.

I made this in between orders, specially for my baby daughter. I proudly used the 'Snow Flakes' design from Australian Smocking & Embroidery magazine as I've been wanting to use the designs featured in my favourite magazine for someone so special to me. :-)

Altered Dresses ~ Smocking for Older Girl

I received these two dresses that were supposed to be worn on Deepavali...

My customer asked me to do something about the dresses, perhaps adding some lace details to make them look interesting. But in the end we both agreed that maybe I could add smocked insert, so...

1) The first dress: It's a very dark green DC, I took out the trimming and added a cream insert with yellow flowers details. I didn't change the sleeves.

2) The second dress: It's a gold cotton fabric with maroon flower motifs. There's no more trimming and my customer just wanted a simple smocked insert using the Perfect Mauve design. So I used light yellow cotton for the insert and just embellished the smocking with glass pearls...

Both dresses were replaced with blind zippers for enclosure, added with sashes matching with the smocked inserts, and the collars are altered too with piped Peter Pan collars.

When the sweet M put on the two dresses and happy with it, I'm so happy too! :-) She's such a sweet and polite young lady. She's going to wear the dress on her birthday this January. So, happy birthday! :-)

Baby Boy's Romper Suit

This unique romper suit is simply smocked on the chest and come with corduroy pants to match.

I'm still working on some more orders and expect to complete all by the end of December. Thanks for your continuous support. I've planned a few surprises for a friend of mine and hope it will be in time for her celebration. Also, I just can't wait whether I shall smock romper suits or dresses for my baby :-)

This year, I've been receiving good news and my gifts are all for baby boys. I hope I'll be making something for baby girls next year... :-)

Successful Pleating

I dedicate this post to a friend of mine, Mdm J (and other smockers too!) who is very passionate about her new-found hobby. Here, I try to give some tips on how to pleat successfully. This is how I do the pleating which could vary from other smockers.

1. Preparing the pleater.
First, I shall thread my pleating needles. I imagine how easy it will be after I roll my fabric and pleat it right away.

2. Preparing the fabric.

For beginners, you will want to make this process as easy as possible and one of the ways is the fabric choice. Natural fabric like cotton (even polycotton) is generally easy to pleat. Other type of fabric such as satin could be a bit challenging.

I make sure the cut end is straight by pulling the grain crosswise then cut. By doing this, you will have straight end when rolling your fabric later.

Just before pleating, I will press the fabric and this not only make your fabric crispy (so easy to pleat) but also much easier to roll neatly into the pleating rod. For thinner type of fabric like polycotton, I will spray starch and press...then roll.. :-)

3. Preparing to roll the fabric.
Just before I roll the fabric, I just love to spread a thick and steady cloth (mine is an old curtain) on my smooth table. And here, on the cloth I start rolling my fabric, which I think this way help me control the fabric rather than rolling on the smooth surface. The result, I get my fabric rolled neatly and straight pleating later on.

4. Pleating my fabric.
Finish rolling and still holding on to it, I quickly bring it to the pleating machine and because my pleater is ready, I simply pleat it! How convenient!

5. Tips when pleating
- Look at the pic how I pleat. Only to be pleated section is rolled into the rod.
- I always do the pleating on my table.
- I always stand up when I pleat, just to make sure that it is straight (see the red arrow).
- I seldom have a helper pleating with me, so I must remember to stop frequently so I can clear the needles, reducing the risk of bent/broken needles.

So, Mdm J, that's how I do my pleating! You'll find my tips very useful but when you explore more in your A - Z series, you'll discover even more tips in perfecting your pleating! Stick to your book and this is a loving message from my cat Dodo:

It was such a nice experience and though it was hot, it was fun catching up with my regulars in Miri. I had a great time educating people about Smocking (thanks Button Point for placing smocking magazines and A - Z series). Perhaps next year if I could have enough time to prepare, I shall put my work on Sulam Cabut Sarawak as well. :-)

It was a tiring 3-day Expo but Alhamdulillah I was so supported by my loving husband and my dearest buah Alif Harriz, got to meet with people and made friends with other participants too... they were really nice people.

With more orders coming in, I just wish I could expand my team this year coz up to now, I still couldn't avoid that guilty feeling when I have to say no to someone's last-minute order...

Aunt Erpha Welcomes Aathif Wira

Assalam...

I made yet another romper this year, an adaptation of Little Sailor, from my favourite smocking magazine Australian Smocking & Embroidery. This time, Aunt Erpha dedicates her lovingly smocked and sewn romper for her new anak buah, Muhammad Aathif Wira Muazzam Bin Junaidi. :-)

I was looking for darker colour like navy but couldn't find one. Then I saw this stripe light green and matched it with cream US cotton for the collar.

I'm not sure about other smockers but I think it is not usual for baby boys wearing rompers here in Malaysia. So I try my best to make smocked outfits wearable for baby boys too... :-)

Let's check the crotch bands, instead of using buttons, I substitude it with velcro. It's easier for mama (my dearest sister Rimba), suggested my hubby.

See the back view. I omit the belt (Aunt Erpha was rushing again). I just love the collars! :-)

I'm quite pleased with the outcome. I hope they'll like it :-)

Fabric Descriptions:

1. JC pink - 100% Japanese cotton (medium thick) with very sweet pink colour. Definitely a favourite colour for babies.
2. IB purple - polycotton (thin), generally cheaper than other cotton fabrics but widely used for baby garments. Suitable for baby bishops with very light purple colour.
3. IB violet - polycotton (thin), unique colour for baby garments, be it bishops or babydoll dress.
4. IB mauve - polycotton (thin), this romantic shade makes roses embroidery stand out in a baby dress.
5. AC offwhite - 100% US cotton (thick) makes beautiful bishops, bonnets enhanced with flowery embroidery of your colour choices.

Cherubim for Awali Asfa Fadly

This smart baby rompers is made to welcome my newborn nephew, Awali Asfa Fadly. Congratulations to my dearest brother, Fadly!

So cute I was smiling and laughing throughout the sewing process. hehehe hahaha hohoho whoa!

I used DMC Stranded Rayon threads for the shiny effect. Smocking is easy just that a bit challenging in construction part. Rompers are usually made for baby boys and I think it looks equally nice on baby girls too... :-)

It took 2 days to finish (Aunt Erpha is a buzzing busy bee) and I'm so happy with the outcome. See you this weekend baby boy!

Just completed not one, but two baby bishops c/w knickers specially for two little babies. Babies are 3 and 5 months old, cousins.

My design this time is all inspired by my client, Mdm Tini of Kuala Lumpur. The material used is cotton in peach with narrow pink stripe. The shiny effect is so lux, just fit for the occasion and I just love the tiny black roses... :-)

Unique, aren't they. So friends, when come to smocking, the sky is the limit!

Pleating a Bishop With Excessive Frays

* Tips I write here is based on my experience only. If you have questions or tips to share, leave your comment! :-)

Do you neaten the raw edges? I don't.

See the frays?

I was taught to neaten the raw edges i.e overlock stitch for fabric with excessive frays, just before pleating. The frays may get caught between the rollers and it will be difficult to clear once you have pleated half-way.

But I find it better not to neaten the raw edges specially if it involve extra width (assembled garment like bishops, skirts etc.) My goal is to obtain straight pleating and this begins from rolling the fabric onto the pleating rod. If my fabric has different thickness (caused by the overlock stitch), then my pleating will not become straight!

So, what would I do with the frays? I would just carefully trim them off just before it is pleated.

Perfect Mauve Adaptation ~ It's Lavender

I made a special little dress, for a special little girl, who lives in Pahang... :-).

The dress is an adaptation of the original design i.e Perfect Mauve. Only this time I used her mom's choice of fabric, light pastel purple which I also called, Lavender.

Cummerbunds are best for older girls but I still incorporate it in my design and add some smocking details on the sleeves...

Mom says her daughter loves it and I hope she loves wearing it as much as I enjoy making it! :-)

Three Daisies ~ Adaptation

I share with you the adaptation of Three Daisies for my lovely client... :)

Mom requested a maroon fabric for her little daughter. Mom says the dress is a bit flowy...

Here's the closeup. I embroidered little bullion roses instead of daisies. The pink piping detail on the neckline and sleeve enhance the roses...

Bittersweet ~ Adaptation

Salam...

Here's another smocked dress, specially made for Nik's daughter. It's an adaptation of my design ~ Bittersweet & Hard Candy. She requested using this fabric and let's see the outcome... :)

Instead of round neck with binding and piping detail, she wanted Peter Pan collars with lacey frills. I've added a daisy on each collar.

As for the smocking, I used an American cotton as my canvass and smocked Bittersweet design with matching thread colours. Lastly, I've embroidered cast-on daisies to match with the prints. :)

Although it's quite a rush since it's quite a last-minute order, I just hope that her daughter would love this dress as much as I enjoy making it! To all moms, keep those great ideas coming in! :)

Perfect Mauve ~ Adaptation

Salam...

This lime green dress is an adaptation of my design 'Perfect Mauve'.

I used organza as an overlay and as for the lining, I used cotton voile. I treated both fabrics as one when pleating. The organza effect will surely make her feel like a princess and twirl even more!

The smocking is simple with matching green stones attached to it. :) See the closeup.
